MICROSOFT OFFICE 2010 END OF LIFE
On 13 October 2020, also brings about some considerable changes in Microsoft Office 365 will be occurring to only support modern email software.
If you are running Microsoft Office 2010 or Microsoft Office 2013, Microsoft will no longer allow these to access Office 365 after this date.
Quoting the Microsoft website – “Support for Office 2010 will end on October 13, 2020, and there will be no extension and no extended security updates. All your Office 2010 apps will continue to function. However, you could expose yourself to serious and potentially harmful security risks.”
If you are running Microsoft Office 2010 or Microsoft Office 2013, or other programs not supporting modern authentication, then we strongly recommend you upgrade to a supported program as soon as possible.
What does End of Support mean?
As with almost all Microsoft products, Office 2010 End of Support is also coming. After this date, there will be no more bug or security fixes. After the product’s initial release, the lifecycle will last for a number of years. This was 10 years for Office 2010 so when it reaches its end of support on October 13, 2020, there will be no more:
- Bug fixes for detected issues
- Security fixes for new vulnerabilities
- No more technical support
Risks of ignoring the end of life
If you decide to stay using Office 2010 beyond its end of life, then you are at risk of security issues. Because there will be no more security updates, criminals will be targeting Office 2010 users. They know that whatever flaw or bug they are taking advantage of will not be fixed. Will you be a victim? Maybe. Probably not. But you are at increased risk of being.
Increasingly, other programs and Windows itself will not interact well with Microsoft Office 2010. Because no one will be writing or updating their software to talk to it. This will manifest in issues and things not working, or crashing.
You will also have more compatibility issues. Documents shared between people on newer versions of Office may not work as you expect them to. If you work on your own and don’t share documents, perhaps this won’t be such an issue for you. But, if you are managing a team and you’ve still got some people on Office 2010 after the end of life, then it could be a pain.
Lastly, you’re also missing out on all the features and improvements released in the last 10 years! You are also missing out on the ease of use of the Microsoft 365 platform.
What are your options? What to do about the end of life
You’ve got two main choices. Move to Microsoft 365, or upgrade your Office to a later version with a ‘perpetual’ licence.
Microsoft 365 – A subscription (month by month) based service that is really the “go-to” solution. Always up to date, cloud-delivered and taking the work out of administering licences across your business.
Office 2019 Perpetual Licence – Buy this and you can install the latest Office 2019 via download. Keep in mind that this version of Office will have its end of life in October 2025.
Both options are good for their own reasons. But the 365 option has many advantages.
