ASD Essentials & Essential Eight: make security guidance practical

Understand what the guidance means for your business, what your existing controls already cover and which improvements should come next.

Why it matters to your business

Focus on business impact

Identify the accounts, applications and data your people depend on. Use that picture to decide where a failure or compromise would hurt most.

Give improvements an owner

Set out what needs attention, who approves it and who checks it works. Keep responsibility visible across your business and IT providers.

Build recovery into the discussion

Ask how you would regain access and restore business data. Review arrangements before an incident exposes gaps.

What changed—and what still matters

ASD describes Essentials using principles, actions and domains, with phased priorities. Existing Essential Eight investment remains relevant; ASD advises continuing approved security improvements. An Essential Eight maturity rating does not automatically become an Essentials effectiveness result.

Make the guidance fit a smaller business

ASD primarily addresses larger organisations in Essentials, while smaller businesses can use relevant guidance. Its Small Business Hub also provides tailored advice. PCFIXIT starts with your environment and agreed priorities, rather than treating every enterprise requirement as necessary for every small business.

Practical work, defined scope

A review can cover Microsoft 365 identity and access, supported devices, patching, application controls, backup and response responsibilities. We agree what is in scope, record gaps and plan improvements. Product licensing or installation alone does not demonstrate that a control works.

Connect the plan to ongoing support

ProactivCare Readiness, Maturity and Resilience provide different agreed service scopes. We can discuss how your plan supports the actions identified, which responsibilities remain with your business and whether separate assessment or project work is needed.

From questions to a practical plan

  1. Scope: agree the business systems, goals and responsibilities.
  2. Review: examine the information available and identify gaps.
  3. Prioritise: agree actions, owners and any separate project work.
  4. Revisit: check progress and update the plan as your environment changes.

The initial conversation defines the next step. It is not a completed assessment or a guarantee of compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Is ASD Essentials simply a new name for the Essential Eight?

No. ASD describes a change in approach towards security outcomes across different technology environments. Existing Essential Eight controls remain useful.

Should we stop our Essential Eight improvement project?

ASD advises continuing approved security improvements while reviewing alignment with Essentials. Discuss any proposed change of scope with the people responsible for your project.

Does Microsoft 365 cover everything?

No single subscription establishes your security position. The configuration, device coverage, account access, monitoring, staff processes and recovery arrangements all need attention.

Does PCFIXIT provide an ASD certification?

This service is practical review and implementation support, not an ASD certification. Any formal assessment needs a separately agreed scope, evidence and suitable assessment arrangements.

Where should our business start?

Bring a list of your users, devices, cloud services and current IT arrangements. Tell us which systems are critical and any recent concerns. We can then agree the scope of an initial review.

How does this relate to SMB1001?

Treat them as distinct frameworks with their own purposes and requirements. We can discuss useful overlap in your improvement work, but progress against one should not be presented as automatic achievement of the other.

Clear priorities. A practical next step.

Tell us what your business relies on, what concerns you and what you want to achieve. We will discuss the right starting point and agree the scope before work begins.
