Common PC Problems: Safe First Checks Before Booking Support

A few simple observations can make a computer fault easier to diagnose. Start by recording what happens, when it started and whether the problem affects one application, one device or several devices.

If the computer is slow

Save your work and check whether the slowdown affects everything or only one task. Note any error messages and recent changes. Check available storage, but do not delete unfamiliar system files or remove important documents without confirming a usable backup.

If Wi-Fi or internet access fails

Check whether another device can connect. Note the router lights and whether the problem affects only Wi-Fi or also a wired connection. Avoid factory-resetting a router without its configuration and access details; that can create a larger outage.

If a printer will not respond

Check its power, displayed errors, paper and connection. Confirm that you selected the intended printer. For a business printer, check whether other staff can print before changing shared settings.

If you suspect malware or account compromise

Stop entering sensitive information on the affected device and contact your IT provider. Do not install an unfamiliar cleanup tool suggested by a popup. Tell the provider what you clicked, what appeared and whether you entered account details.

When to stop troubleshooting

If important files are missing, the device has physical damage or repeated attempts are making the symptoms worse, stop and seek advice. Do not reset or reinstall the operating system until the data and recovery implications have been discussed.

What to include in your support request

  • Device make and model.
  • The exact error message or a screenshot without sensitive information.
  • When the issue started and what changed beforehand.
  • Whether other devices are affected.
  • Your backup status and how urgently you need access.
